Tem's Root Beer

My good friend, DP, from Germany surprised me and brought this root beer to me on his recent visit to Canada.  A German root beer? Very cool!  Tem's Root Beer is made by the folks at Temetum in Biebertal, Germany.   According to Temetum, it is "Powered by Mother Earth" - a natural root beer perhaps? I didn't do too much research as the can is all in German :).  Also, "aber kein bier!" :D  I waited for the Christmas holidays to try this special brew.

When you first crack it open, you are welcomed with a very rooty aroma. It smelled great!  I then poured it into one of my root beer mugs to judge the head.  There was a small head to it but it dissipated quite quickly.  The bite on this brew is quite strong and I was really surprised how the bite and the sweetness were very well balanced.  I think licorice root may be one of the dominant flavors in this brew and I also believe it may be a bit too overpowering.  I'm very impressed with this root beer and I want to thank my good friend, DP, very much for bringing this one to me from across the pond.

Harmony Springs Root Beer

Harmony Springs Root Beer is yet another brew that I received in trade through Brad. This root beer is brought to you by Harmony Springs in Ludlow, MA.

This root beer has a head that fizzles away almost immediately.. It shows some promise then it vanishes.  The flavor profile is built using natural flavors and it is sweetened with pure cane sugar.   The balance is o.k.; however, the bite could be better and I got a bit of an aftertaste while sipping away at it.  Not really a fan of this one but it's not terrible.

Reading Draft Root Beer

Reading Draft Root Beer is another brew that I received in trade through Brad. This root beer is brought to you by Reading Draft Soda in Reading, PA.

Reading... Reading Railroad...Monopoly... cool!  The head on this root beer fizzles fast and is pretty non-existant in the first place.  The flavor profile is built using natural and/or artificial flavorings. :/  It is sweetened with pure cane sugar.  It has an okay bite to it but nothing spectacular.  I found it to be very average.

Duffy's Rowdy Root Beer

Duffy's Rowdy Root Beer is another brew that I received in trade through Brad. This root beer is brought to you by Duffy's Beverage Company in Denver, CO.  They appear to be out of business now.

This root beer is flavored with vanilla and other natural flavors.  It is sweetened with pure cane sugar and has a decent sweetness balance as well.  The head produced is very short lived.  I found this root beer to be above average.

Twisted Root Root Beer

Twisted Root Root Beer is another brew that I received in trade through Brad. This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Ocean City Brewing Company in Ocean City, MD.

This root beer is an absolute delight.  From the inch tall head when poured to the flavor and well-balanced sweetness and bite, Ocean City does a superb job in crafting this brew.  The flavor profile is built using natural and artificial flavors and it is sweetened with cane sugar.  It has a certain creaminess to it which I really like.  That and also the awesome label.

Uncle Scott's All Natural Root Beer

Uncle Scott's All Natural Root Beer is another brew that I received in trade through Brad. This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Uncle Scott's Root Beer in Mooresville, NC.

The flavor profile for this root beer is built using ingredients such as: vanilla, cinnamon oil, natural caramel, wood extract, licorice root oil, anise oil and natural gum arabic.   It is sweetened with pure cane sugar.    There are no artificial ingredients or preservatives hence the "natural" tag.  Overall, I found it to be an average brew.

Pizza Vinoteca Root Beer

Pizza Vinoteca Root Beer is another brew that I received in trade through Brad. This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Pizza Vinoteca in Arlington, VA.

My what a large head you pour Pizza Vinoteca!  I think the head stands about 2" tall after you pour it.  The flavor profile is built using Madagascar vanilla, sarsaparilla, cascade hops and burdock.  The balance with the sweetness is almost perfect. It's a really good root beer.

Junior Johnson Original Root Beer

Junior Johnson Original Root Beer is another brew that I received in trade through Brad.  According to the label, this root beer is bottled under the authority of "Yadkin Valley Foods", in Winston Salem, NC.

What a wonderful head this root beer produces!  An inch tall in my books.  The flavor profile is built using natural and artificial flavors including yucca extract.  It is sweetened with cane sugar.  I was a bit worried about this one since Brad didn't enjoy his bottle; however, my bottle seemed to be on point.  I thought it was nicely balanced between the sweet and spice.  It had a bit of a bite to it.  Perhaps a bit on the sweeter side.

Otto's Root Beer

Otto's Root Beer is yet another brew that I received in trade with my root beer buddy in Ohio, Brad.  This brew is brought to you by the folks over at Otto's Pub & Brewery in State College, PA.

This root beer has a decent bite and the sweetness is nicely balanced as well.  The flavor profile is built using natural and artificial flavors including yucca extract and vanillin (extract of vanilla).  It is sweetened with cane sugar and also dark brown sugar.  There is not much of a head to it when you pour it.  Overall, I found Otto's to be quite enjoyable.

Route Beer 66

Route Beer 66 is yet another brew that I received in trade with my root beer buddy in Ohio, Brad. This brew is brought to you by Route 66 Sodas in Lebanon, MO.

This root beer doesn't produce a head when you pour it as the foam just fizzles away immediately.  The flavor profile is created by natural and artificial flavors.  It is sweetened with real cane sugar.  I enjoyed it. It's an above average root beer that reminds me of an old fashioned brew somewhat.  Nice job Route 66.

Sprecher Honey Root Beer

Sprecher Honey Root Beer is yet another brew that I received in trade with my root beer buddy in Ohio, Brad. This brew is brought to you by the Sprecher Brewing Company in Glendale, WI.

This brew has a thick foamy head to it about a 1/2" in height when you pour it.  The flavor profile is built with natural and artificial flavors and it is sweetened with raw Wisconsin honey.  I'm not sure if it was this particular bottle or something had gone wrong with it as I tasted more sourness and almost vinegary on my palate the whole time.  I couldn't finish it.  I think I'll have to try another bottle of this when I can get the chance.  No rating until I try another bottle.

Gus's Burrow Brew Root Beer

Gus's Burrow Brew Root Beer was procured and brought to me by one of my co-workers and her friend in Halifax, NS.  Thanks a bunch TC and JP! This root beer was specially made by Garrison Brewing Company in Halifax, NS for the Museum of Natural History in Halifax.  Gus is a gopher tortoise at the museum who just turned 93 years old this past August!  In honor of his birthday, Garrison was kind enough to create a special root beer just for him!  Can't say enough about Garrison and the kindness and class they show.

On to the root beer!  I poured this special brew in my favorite root beer mug.  I didn't get much of a head out of it, but I wasn't too worried about it.  The bite on this root beer was quite strong and the flavor profile was on the spicier side which overtakes the sweetness by a slight margin. I guess that is just the sweet lover in me.  I loved Garrison's Cannonball root beer and this one is just right behind it in my ranks.  The label gets a 10 though.  Good job Garrison and a very Happy Birthday to you Gus! Cheers (*with my root beer mug*) to more healthy and happy years ahead of you!

55 Brand Root Beer

My good friend BS, the root beer king of America and I had been trying to get our hands on this root beer for a while now.   Myself, in early May of this year, sent an email to Burger 55 asking whether they could sell/ship me some root beer and received the following response from the owner/operator: "Yes absolutely we can do that. Just let me know where to send it!".  I replied asking what the best way was to pay and arrange for the shipping to which no response came.   I emailed again and again it fell on deaf ears.  Lucky enough for me,  my awesome sister and brother-in-law's brother, Jeff, came to the rescue this summer.  A big thank you to Jeff for running all the way out (going out of his way) to Penticton to obtain the root beer for me.

55 Brand Root Beer is brought to you by the folks over at The People's Crafthouse, which is located in Penticton, B.C.  This root beer is produced specially for Burger 55 which is a restaurant also in Penticton, B.C.  Jeff mentioned that the burger was really great!  Maybe I will try it someday when passing through Pentiction (so long as I can get over the poor customer service I received).

Everything about this root beer reminds me of the Crafthouse brew.  The head is as tall as the head on Crafthouse and stands at about 1.5 - 2" tall when you pour the bottle.  As well, the flavor profile is built using a vast number of ingredients including sarsaparilla root, sassafras bark, vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks, juniper berries, wild cherry  bark, ginger root, birch bark, dandelion root, liquorice root, hops flowers and blackstrap molasses.

This root beer is sweetened with organic cane sugar. Similar to the Crafthouse root beer, I'm a big fan of balancing the sweetness with the flavor profile and felt that this root beer left me wanting a bit more sweet.

In closing, similar to the Crafthouse experience, my hasty nature wanted to give this brew a poor rating just based on the poor customer service; however, the root beer lover in me decided to stick to what is most important: the brew.   A note to Burger 55 if you read this:  smarten up with your customer service - no one appreciates that kind of service. If you don't want to ship something then at least say so and put some closure on it.  It is simple to say "I'm sorry, we don't ship to ... If you can ever make it down to our store, we'd appreciate the business."

The People's Crafthouse Root Beer

My good friend BS, the root beer king of America and I had been trying to get our hands on this root beer since this past winter.  Numerous attempts at contacting the company resulted in extremely poor customer service.  Myself, I sent a number of emails asking whether they could ship me some and only once did I hear back from them.  In fact, the gentleman that wrote back even let me know that he would be happy to send me some.  Since at the time, the weather conditions (winter cold) outside did not bode for a safe shipment, I mentioned that I would contact him in late spring/early summer.  When I did so, my request fell on deaf ears on multiple attempts.  I had to resort to other methods to obtain this root beer.  Thankfully, my awesome sister and brother-in-law's brother came to the rescue this summer.  A big thank you to Jeff for running all the way out (going out of his way) to Penticton to obtain the root beer for me.

This root beer is named after the company, The People's Crafthouse, which is located in Penticton, B.C.  The head on this root beer is insane and stands at about 1.5 - 2" tall when you pour the bottle.  The flavor profile is built using a vast number of ingredients including sarsaparilla root, sassafras bark, vanilla beans, cinnamon bark, juniper berries, wild cherry  bark, ginger root, birch bark, dandelion root, liquorice root, hops flowers, maple extract, molasses and burdock root.

This root beer is sweetened with organic cane sugar.  I'm a big fan of balancing the sweetness with the flavor profile and felt that Crafthouse left me wanting a bit more sweet.  In fact, I imagine this root beer would make an incredible root beer float (which I will try in the future).

In closing, I thought long and hard about the whole ordeal of obtaining this brew from the beginning and the trials and tribulations endured in the beginning.  My hasty nature wanted to give this brew a poor rating just based on that; however, the root beer lover in me decided to stick to what is most important: the brew.   A note to Crafthouse if you read this:  smarten up with your customer service - no one appreciates that kind of service. If you don't want to ship something then at least say so and put some closure on it.  It is simple to say "I'm sorry, we don't ship to ... Overwaitea Old Fashioned Root Beer

I found Overwaitea Old Fashioned Root Beer  in a Save-On-Foods grocery store in Lethbridge, Alberta.  Overwaitea Food Group is celebrating it's 100th anniversary this year and to mark the occasion, they produced this specially crafted root beer.

The head on this root beer is non-existent and I initially had my doubts but the flavor profile and sweetness balance was surprisingly good!  I found this root beer to be not overly sweet and it had that nice old-fashioned root beer flavor profile to boot!  Perhaps it could use a bit more bite; however, I enjoyed this root beer very much!

Rock Island Brewing Company Pumpkin Spiced Root Beer

I acquired Rock Island Brewing Company  Pumpkin Spiced Root Beer in a trade with Anthony over at Anthony's Root Beer Barrel. This root beer is a creation by the folks over at Rock Island Soda in Wading River, NY.

This root beer doesn't have a tall head when you pour it, unlike Rock Island's regular root beer.  The flavor profile is built using natural and artificial flavorings.  It is sweetened with glucose syrup and raw honey.  This root beer is creamy and I get the pumpkin spice flavor coming from it but I found it is a bit on the sweet side.  I did enjoy it though.

I acquired Rock Island Brewing Company  Root Beer in a trade with Anthony over at Anthony's Root Beer Barrel. This root beer is a creation by the folks over at Rock Island Soda in Wading River, NY.

I love root beers that pour a decent head.  This one has a nice one that when finished pouring, settles to about a 1/2" tall.  The flavor profile is built using natural and artificial flavorings including quillaia/yucca extract and vanilla.  It is sweetened with glucose syrup and raw honey.  This root beer is creamy and packs comes with a great bite and balance with the sweetness.  A perfect brew for me. :)

Pithy Little Soda Works Root Beer

I acquired PIthy Little Soda Works Root Beer in a trade with Anthony over at Anthony's Root Beer Barrel. This root beer is a creation by the folks over at Pithy Little Wine Company in Paso Robles, CA.

Here is yet another root beer whose head disappears almost immediately after pouring it.   It is sweetened with cane sugar and the flavor profile is built using natural flavorings including vanilla.  The bite was weak and I received an overwhelming taste of vanilla in my mouth and could not enjoy any of the other flavor offerings.  It was also very very sweet.  It was a bit of a disappointment for me. I read good things about this one. Maybe try it for yourself one day as perhaps I had a bad batch.

Michael's Dolce Root Beer Syrup

My girlfriend found out about a new product in town when she came across this article in the Ottawa Citizen. When I learned there was someone passionate about root beer in my own city, I just had to seek him out.

The brain behind Michael's Dolce Root Beer Syrup is Michael Sunderland.  He is the founder, proprietor and confectioner of Michael's Dolce in Ottawa, ON.

I met Michael today while visiting the Ottawa Farmer's Market at Lansdowne.  He has a booth setup where he sells various jams as well as his root beer syrup.  I sampled a glass of his root beer (sold on site for $4 a cup).  The root beer syrup is mixed with carbonated soda water and served on ice in a 12 ounce cup.   The flavor profile is built using natural ingredients such as star anise, ginger, cloves, orange peel, chicory and wintergreen.  It is also sweetened with sugar.   The bite on this root beer is fantastic and is very well balanced.  Too bad there isn't a nice head to go along with this wonderful beverage as it was the only thing missing.  However, I don't know if it is fair to compare this to other artisan bottled root beers.  Perhaps I need to start blogging about root beer syrups and extracts. :)    Michael, take a bow though, you have something really delicious there and hence why I bought a bottle of syrup to take home with me.   I'll be back for more!

Summit Vintage Root Beer

Summit Vintage is yet another one of those bottled root beers that pours a head that disappears almost immediately.    It is sweetened with sugar and the flavor profile is built using natural and artificial flavor.  I kept getting an overwhelming taste of vanilla throughout each sip.  It was very sweet and the bite was lacking.

Wow, what  a large head this one has when you pour it.  It was insane.   The flavor profile is built using natural guarana extract and other natural and artificial flavorings.  It is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup.   It also comes with a warning "This product contains high levels of Caffeine".   I went to bed about 2 hours later, so maybe not an extraordinary amount.   I thought this one was so-so in the taste department.  But kudos to Bawls for creating another root beer when you need a pick me up.

This one is another root beer with a head that disappears almost immediately.   The flavor profile is built using natural and artificial flavorings.  It is sweetened with sugar.   I found the bite to this one on the weak side.  The flavor reminded me a little bit of a medicinal taste but perhaps that it's coming from the "birch" aspect of the root beer.  I wasn't too fond of this one but it wasn't horrible.

Virgil's Zero Root Beer

My friend and colleague, ML, bought this one for me on a recent trip to the USA. This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Reed's Inc. based out of Los Angeles, CA.

I'm not sure it is fair to this brew that I review it compared to so many other non-sugar sweetened root beers, but nonetheless here it is.

Virgil's created this root beer to be sugar free and zero calories.  It is sweetened with stevia and the flavor profile built using natural flavors and spices.  To be honest, I hated it. I had to pour it out but I don't think it's fair to compare to others.  For those of you seeking a sugar free drink, this may be enjoyable to you; however, my rating is what it is.

My friend and colleague, DM, helped get Big Ben's Root Beer to me.  I ordered this one from the helpful and friendly folks at Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.   This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Catawissa Bottling in Catawissa, PA.

Big Ben's doesn't produce much of a head when you pour it.  It's flavor profile is built using artificial and natural flavors including yucca extract and acacia.  It doesn't have much of a bite to it even though the flavors are there, they are overridden by the sweetness.  A bit on the sweet side.

Filbert's Draft Root Beer

My friend and colleague, DM, helped get Filbert's Draft Root Beer to me.  I ordered this one from the helpful and friendly folks at Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.  This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Filbert Root Beer Company in Chicago, IL.

Although the head on this root beer dissipates quite quickly, I found it to be well balanced between the sweetness (pure cane sugar) and the flavor.  It has a significant bite and the flavor profile is built with natural and artificial flavorings.   I thoroughly enjoyed this one -- it was almost perfect.

AJ Stephans Butterscotch Root Beer

My friend and colleague, DM, helped get AJ Stephans Butterscotch Root Beer to me.  I ordered this one from the helpful and friendly folks at Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.   This root beer is brought to you by the folks at AJ Stephans Company in Fall River, MA.

As much as I liked their original root beer, this one missed the mark for me.  Like it's brother, this one didn't have much of a head to it and in addition is overpowered by the sweetness.  In fact, I think the butterscotch flavor could be of been more pronounced but all I got was sweet sweet sweet.  Sorry AJs.. Wish I could of liked this one as much as it's brother.

Foxon Park Draft Style Root Beer

My friend and colleague, DM, helped get Foxon Park Draft Style Root Beer to me.  I ordered this one from the helpful and friendly folks at Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.  This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Foxon Park Beverages in East Haven, CT.

This root beer has about a 12-15 second head when poured.  It is sweetened with sugar and the flavor profile is built using natural and artificial flavors.   Unfortunately, I did not get to taste much of the flavor profile due to overwhelming sweetness.  I needed some salty snacks to go with it.

Cool Mountain Root Beer

My friend and colleague, DM, helped get Cool Mountain Root Beer to me.  I ordered this one from the helpful and friendly folks at Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.  This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Cool Mountain Beverages in Des Plaines, IL.

I found Cool Mountain to be an average brew.  The head disappears immediately when it is poured.  There is a mild bite to it and the sweetness is definitely there from the pure cane sugar.   The flavor profile is built using natural and artificial flavors.

Zuberfizz Creamy Root Beer

My friend and colleague, DM, helped get Dog N Suds Root Beer to me.  I ordered this one from the helpful and friendly folks at Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.  Zuberfizz is brought to you by the folks over at Durango Soda Company Inc. in Durango, CO.  (website is down?)

This root beer doesn't pack much of a punch. It may have been my bottle that I drank since it seemed flat to me and there was no bite to it that I could feel not to mention the non-existent head.  It was sweet via the pure cane sugar and the flavor profile is built on natural and artificial flavors.  It was a bit below average.  Perhaps I'll try another bottle some day to confirm.

My friend and colleague, DM, helped get Dog N Suds Root Beer to me.  I ordered this one from the helpful and friendly folks at Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.  Dog N Suds is brought to you by Dog N Suds Bottled Beverages in Norton Shores, MI.

This root beer has a head that lasts about 5 seconds.  It is sweetened with pure cane sugar and the flavor profile is built with artificial and natural flavorings.  I thought it had an average bite to it. It wasn't overpowering and may have been a bit on the sweeter side.  It is a decent root beer.

Hosmer Mountain Sarsaparilla Root Beer

My friend and colleague, DM, helped get Hosmer Mountain Sarsaparilla Root Beer to me.  I ordered this one from the helpful and friendly folks at Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.  This root beer is brought to you by the folks at Hosmer Soda.

This root beer has a nice head when poured (about 1" tall) but it doesn't last long.  It is sweetened with a mix of sugar and brown sugar.  The flavor profile is built using natural and artificial flavorings including extract of sarsaparilla root. It is creamy and smooth but there wasn't an aggressive bite to it.  I enjoyed it though and would have another in the future.
