Boots Sarsaparilla Root Beer

Boots Sarsaparilla Root Beer was given to me by Eric over at Eric's Gourmet Root Beer. (Thanks Eric!) This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Boots Beverages in Texas.

This root beer has quite the head to it when you pour it.  It is thick and foamy and doesn't completely disappear on you right away either.   It is sweetened with sugar and the flavor profile is built using  natural flavorings including quillaia extract.  The bite was decent but I thought the sweetness was a bit overpowering.

This root beer is sweetened with cane sugar and honey.  The flavor profile is built using artificial and natural flavorings including vanilla extract.  There is a a decent bite to this root beer but I thought the sweetness was overpowering.  The head basically disappeared when you poured it as well.

Norka Sparkling Beverages Root Beer

Norka Sparkling Beverages Root Beer was given to me by Eric over at Eric's Gourmet Root Beer. (Thanks Eric!)  This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Norka Beverages in Akron, OH.

This root beer surprised me a little bit.  I wasn't sure what to expect when I read "sparkling beverages".   However, I actually enjoyed the flavor profile of this (built using natural flavors).  It is sweetened with cane sugar and the bite is average.  I wished it had a little more kick to it.  In general, it is an above average root beer.

Steelhead Root Beer

I acquired Steelhead Root Beer in a trade with Eric over at Eric's Gourmet Root Beer. This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Steelhead Brewing Company.  They have a couple locations one of which is in Eugene, OR and the other in Burlingame, CA.

I love the name and the artwork on this label.  Being a fisherman, I was really keen on acquiring this root beer.   It sports a small 1/2" head when you pour it.  The flavor profile is built using natural and artificial flavors.  It is sweetened with cane sugar and the balance is pretty good.  I thought it could use a bit more bite  but overall it was enjoyable.

Pallino Root Beer

I acquired Pallino Root Beer in a trade with Eric over at Eric's Gourmet Root Beer.  Pallino is brought to you by the folks over at Pallino Pastaria in Seattle, WA.

There is a nice tall head on this root beer when you first pour it but it disappears quickly.   It sports a good bite and has a nice creaminess to it.  The flavor profile is built using vanilla, licorice, sassafras root bark, acacia extract and other natural flavors.  It is sweetened with cane sugar and I found the balance with the flavor above average.

Tyler The Kid Sarsaparilla

I bought Tyler The Kid Sarsaparilla on a recent trip down to Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.  This sarsaparilla is brought to you by the folks over at Rocket Fizz.

Rocket Fizz produces a lot of different sodas and such.  This sarsaparilla appeared to me as just another regular off the shelf type drink.   It sports a quickly disappearing head; however, the bite is quite nice.  It is sweetened with cane sugar and the flavor profile is built using natural flavors and real vanilla.  I found it to be above average but it didn't become a favorite of mine.

Barons Boothill Sassparilla

I bought Barons Boothill Sassparilla on a recent trip down to Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.

This is a really good sarsaparilla.  The head on it disappears rather quickly, but the flavor profile is really nice!   It uses natural flavorings and is sweetened with fructose according to the label.  It has a decent bite but perhaps the fructose / sweetness throws the balance off just a bit.

Virgil's Zero Root Beer

My friend and colleague, ML, bought this one for me on a recent trip to the USA. This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Reed's Inc. based out of Los Angeles, CA.

I'm not sure it is fair to this brew that I review it compared to so many other non-sugar sweetened root beers, but nonetheless here it is.

Virgil's created this root beer to be sugar free and zero calories.  It is sweetened with stevia and the flavor profile built using natural flavors and spices.  To be honest, I hated it. I had to pour it out but I don't think it's fair to compare to others.  For those of you seeking a sugar free drink, this may be enjoyable to you; however, my rating is what it is.

Caamano Bros. High Noon Sarsaparilla

I bought Caamano Bros. High Noon Sarsaparilla on a recent trip down to Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.  This sarsaparilla is brought to you by the folks over at Caamano Bros. Soda Pop Company based out of Modesto, CA.

This brew doesn't have much of a head to it as it disappears quickly like so many others.   It is sweetened with cane sugar and the flavor profile is built with natural ingredients.  I didn't enjoy this one as I kept getting some odd aftertastes after every sip.  The flavor and sweetness balance may have been off a bit as well.

Virgil's Special Edition Bavarian Nutmeg Root Beer

I bought Virgil's Special Edition Bavarian Nutmeg Root Beer on a recent trip down to Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.  This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Reed's Inc. based out of Los Angeles, CA.

This root beer has a fairly tall head when poured but it disappears quite quickly.  It is sweetened with cane sugar and molasses. The flavor profile is built using natural flavors such as anise, cinnamon, licorice, vanilla, clove, wintergreen, sweet birch and of course nutmeg to name a few of the ingredients.   The bite is very good; however, I felt that the sweetness was just a bit overpowering and kept me from giving it a perfect score.

Manhattan Special Sarsaparilla

I bought Manhattan Special Sarsaparilla on a recent trip down to Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.   This soda is brought to you by the folks over at Manhattan Special Bottling based out of Brooklyn, NY.

This sarsaparilla has a pretty nice sized head to it when you pour it but it disappears quickly.   It is sweetened with pure cane sugar and the flavor profile is built using natural flavorings.  It has a pretty strong bite to it but I found it to be more of a medicinal taste in my mouth afterwards.  Not sure what to think about this one really.

Columbia Soda Works Sarsaparilla Soda

I bought Columbia Soda Works Sarsaparilla Soda on a recent trip down to Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.  This sarsaparilla is brought to you by the folks at Columbia Soda Works in Columbia, CA.

The head on this sarsaparilla dissipates quickly.   It packs a definite bite to it with licorice being at the forefront.  It is sweetened with high fructose corn sweetener and the rest of the flavor is developed with artificial and natural flavorings.  I really enjoyed this beverage and thought it was well above average.

The head on this root beer dissipates fairly quickly when you pour it.  It is sweetened with cane sugar and the flavor profile is built using natural and artificial flavors.  There is a good bite to this root beer.  The balance between the sweetness and flavor wasn't bad.  I thought it was an above average root beer.

O-So Butterscotch Root Beer

I bought Gene Autry Root Beer on a recent trip down to Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.  This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Orca Beverages in Mukilteo, WA.

O-So Butterscotch root beer doesn't have much of a head to it when you pour it.   It is sweetened with cane sugar and the flavor profile is built using natural and artificial flavors including vanilla extract.  I fought to find the butterscotch flavor -- for the life of me, I couldn't taste it.  I think the sweetness is overpowering it and that is all I could think about while drinking it.  A bit of a disappointment for me.

The head on this root beer disappears pretty quickly.  It is sweetened with cane sugar and the flavor profile is built using natural flavors and real vanilla.   The bite is excellent and for me I wanted it to be balanced with maybe a bit more sweetness; however, it was definitely an above average root beer.  I love the name and the label of this brew.

Gray's Gourmet Root Beer

I bought Gray's Gourmet Root Beer on a recent trip down to Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON. This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Gray Brewing Company in Janesville, WI.

There was not much of a head to this root beer when I poured my bottle.  It dissipated quickly.   It is sweetened with pure cane sugar and the flavor profile is built with natural flavorings.  I thought there was a decent bite to it (not overpowering by any means).  The balance was nice. I thought it was an above average brew.

Frostop Premium Root Beer

My friend and colleague, DM, helped get Frostop Premium Root Beer to me.  I ordered this one from the helpful and friendly folks at Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON. This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at Frostop Beverages Inc. with their headquarters in Columbus, OH.

I can't believe the head on this one. It is insane and it tries to last forever for you.  This root beer is super creamy with a flavorful bite and is well balanced.  It is sweetened with real sugar and the flavor profile is developed by artificial and natural flavors. It is wonderful!  My only regret is that I bought only one bottle of it!   Superb Frostop folks!  Take a bow, you deserve it.

Sioux City Root Beer

I bought Sioux City Root Beer on a recent trip down to Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON. This root beer is brought to you by the folks over at White Rock Beverages in Whitestone, NY.

There is about a 1.5" head when you pour this brew.  It doesn't last long but it's nice to see.   The flavor profile is built using natural and artificial flavors.  It is sweetened with pure cane sugar.  It has a decent bite to it and is balanced really well with the sweetness.  I enjoyed this more than their Sarsaparilla.

Squamscot Root Beer

My friend and colleague, DM, helped get Squamscot Root Beer to me.  I ordered this one from the helpful and friendly folks at Soda Pop Central in Whitby, ON.  This root beer is brought to you by the folks at Conner Bottling Works in Newfields, NH.

This root beer is very very sweet. It is sweetened with cane sugar and the flavor profile is built using natural flavorings as well as clove oil which is interesting.  With almost no head to it when poured, all I could taste is the sweetness with every sip.  Kind of disappointed in this one. When I hear "old fashioned" root beer, I get my hopes up for a bitey brew.
